HEAD TO HEAD
The two sides have met on three occasions in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Western Storm have won two of the games, with Sunrisers coming out on top once.
The last time the two clashed in the competition was earlier this month at the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford.
It was a dramatic match which saw Western Storm snatch a one wicket victory off the very last ball of the match.
Storm Captain, Sophie Luff won the toss and elected to field.
Cordelia Griffith and Grace Scrivens shared an opening stand of 50 to give the hosts a solid platform on which to build. Scrivens went on to make 56 from just 42 balls as Sunrisers posted a total of 160 for five from their 20 overs.
Scrivens then impressed with the ball taking four for 33, but it was all to be in vane for the 18-year-old.
The Storm chase started poorly and the visitors slipped to 29 for three. However, Heather Knight (27 from 24 balls) and Danielle Gibson (27 from 20) added 41 for the fourth wicket. A rapid 34 from Katie George and 27 from Nat Wraith ensured that Storm remained in the game.
Needing three off the final ball, the last-wicket pair of Alex Griffiths and debutant Sophia Smale snatched an incredible victory for their side as the throw from long-on sailed over the head of despairing wicketkeeper Scarlett Hughes and away to the fence.
TEAM NEWS
A starting XI will be named from the following players: Sophie Luff (c), Fran Morris, Heather Knight, Fi Morris, Katie George, Georgia Hennessy, Claire Nicholas, Danielle Gibson, Nat Wraith, Alex Griffiths, Nicole Harvey, Lauren Parfitt, Lauren Filer, Mollie Robbins, Sophia Smale, Niamh Holland and Bethan Gammon.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Ahead of the fixture, Vice Captain, Fran Wilson said: “A similar result to last time would be great, but it would be good not to leave it quite so late on this occasion!
“The situation that we find ourselves in at the moment means that we probably need to win all of our remaining games. That means that all the matches are like a semi-final now.
“The double headers are great, and it’s brilliant to be playing at big grounds like Somerset. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us and for Somerset this weekend and we absolutely love playing at Taunton. Every time I walk out there is really special. I started my cricket career there when I was 11 and it’s definitely one of my favourite grounds. Taunton is a big cricket town and whenever we go there we feel really welcomed and like everyone is rooting for us.”
THE OPPOSITION
SUNRISERS
Interim Head Coach: Laura Marsh
Captain: Kelly Castle
Key player: Mady Villiers.
Mady Villiers was only 13 when she posted her first century in an Essex Schools’ Cup semi-final. Two years later, she took four wickets for her school’s first XI. The allrounder continued to impress over the years, returning figures of 3-22 in the finals of the 2018 Kia Super League and winning the title for Surrey Stars.
Following more impressive performances, this time, for the England Women’s Academy’s 2019 series against Australia A, Villiers rightfully earned her international call-up in an IT20 against Australia in July 2019.
Since then she has played 17 IT20s.
