Sophie, Claire, Alex and Georgia join Welsh Fire

Welsh Fire have announced that four former Western Storm players will be in their squad for the first year of The Hundred.

Sophie Luff, Claire Nicholas, Alex Griffiths and Georgia Hennessy have been revealed as their first four domestic signings.

Matthew Mott’s team will play their matches across Wales and the South West of England – with matches at Sophia Gardens, the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton and the Bristol County Ground.

All four of Welsh Fire’s domestic signings have ties to the region. Sophie is the Captain of Somerset, Claire and Alex are Welsh players and Georgia has represented Devon.

Following the announcement, Sophie said: “It’s very exciting to be involved and I’m delighted to have signed for the team that is the most local one for me. Welsh Fire are associated with the West Country and they will be playing home games in Taunton and Bristol and that was really important for me when it came to making my decision to sign for the team.

“The local element is massively important for me. I pride myself on being a role model in this area and ultimately it was about what role I would be playing and where I felt that I would fit in best. This is where I love playing cricket. To be staying local is really important and hopefully local people will get behind us.

“The women’s game is constantly changing. The KSL did a great job and hopefully The Hundred can build on that and spark more interest in the game. That can only be a good thing.

“To be playing alongside someone like Meg Lanning is very exciting and I’m very much looking forward to it. What an opportunity this is for the younger players in the squad. To have one of the best players in the world in your side is great and I’m looking forward to batting with her.”

Claire said: “I’m really looking forward to playing in The Hundred and representing Welsh Fire. There have been a lot of exciting names announced already and I’m sure it’s going to be a great competition. Working with the likes of Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen – as well as with Matthew Mott – is a really exciting opportunity and I can’t wait.

“There’s obviously a lot of pride across Wales and the South-West of England is an area that really loves its cricket so hopefully we’ll put on a show for the fans in Cardiff, Bristol and Taunton and win some games of cricket.”

The Hundred women’s competition kicks off on 22 July, with the men’s competition getting underway a week earlier on 17 July.
