Sophie looking to hit the ground running at Bristol

Western Storm get our Charlotte Edwards Cup campaign underway on Sunday when we take on South East Stars at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.

We caught up with Captain, Sophie Luff to discuss the upcoming competition.

“We’re all really excited about what’s to come over the next few weeks,” she said. “We go into it with a fresh slate and we know that we’ve played some good cricket so far this season without getting the results that we think we deserve. It’s a new competition and we’ll be looking to hit the ground running on Sunday at Bristol.

“The mood in the camp is really positive. We’ve definitely come a long way as a team from where we were last year. Several individuals have really kicked on over the winter and we’ve certainly seen the evidence of that so far this season. Hopefully, we’ll see more of that in this competition as well.”

Does Sophie think that the squad is potentially better suited to the shorter format of the game?

“If you look at the make up of our team, you’d probably say that we’re more suited to T20 cricket. Most of the players are at the younger end of the spectrum and have therefore grown up playing a lot of T20 cricket through County age groups and Academy programmes. Hopefully, we will also see more of Dani Gibson in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Obviously, we’re disappointed for her that she won’t be involved with the England ODI squad, but she’s a really important player for Storm in all three facets of the game. When you add someone of the quality of Amanda Jade Wellington in to the mix as well, I’d say we’re set up pretty nicely.

“We’ve got a good record in T20 cricket dating back to the KSL days and those of us who were involved back then are desperate for more silverware. The younger players will have grown up watching the team win trophies and wanting to be a part of that and now they’ve got the opportunity to do that. We’ve got a great chance to put a real marker down this year.

“There are no easy games now, whether that be 50-over or T20 cricket. We’ve been really competitive so far this season and I don’t see any reason why that won’t continue going into the Charlotte Edwards Cup. We need to turn up every week and put in match winning performances to make sure that we get over the line. We’ve just missed out so far this year on a few critical moments, so if we can turn that around in this competition then we’ll give ourselves a great chance of winning a lot more games and being up near the top of the table.”
