Sophie looks back on memorable day at Taunton

It was a day to remember for Western Storm at the Cooper Associates County Ground on Sunday.

The team secured a comprehensive 41-run victory over Sunrisers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, Sophie Luff made a big score on her home ground, Heather Knight took one of the best catches Taunton has ever witnessed and Katie George was back amongst the wickets after her long injury layoff.

All in all, it was a near perfect day for Storm.

We caught up with Sophie to discuss the remarkable game.

“It was a very good performance from the girls,” she said. “It’s what we have been looking for all season. It was a complete performance.

“On a personal level it was incredibly special. Everyone knows that I’m a Somerset girl and it meant a huge amount to me to be able to raise my bat on my home ground in front of a decent crowd. It was certainly a game that I’ll remember.”

Sophie shared a 70-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Danielle Gibson, which she felt was crucial to the outcome of the game.

“The partnership with Dani was really important,” she said. “She came in and struck the ball nicely. She hits it really hard and that allowed me to keep going in the way that I was because I knew that she was scoring quickly at the other end.”

The match also saw Katie George take her first wicket for Western Storm since returning to bowling following a long injury layoff.

“Katie has been on the sidelines for a long time, and to see her back on the pitch is brilliant. It’s great to see her back doing what she loves and what she’s so good at. We’re backing her all the way now that she’s back with the ball in her hand.

“She works really hard, and she’s been on a difficult journey. That wicket will be one to remember for her, and I’m sure there will be plenty more before the end of the season.”

Sophie also had a word for England Captain, Heather Knight who took a sensational catch during the match.

“Heather likes to pull out worldies, doesn’t she? Georgia Hennessy took a really good one earlier in the game, but Heather outdid her I think!”
