Trevor excited by T20 challenge

The Charlotte Edwards Cup gets underway this week.

Western Storm begin the road to Finals Day on Friday with a trip to Headingley to take on Northern Diamonds.

Ahead of the competition, Head Coach, Trevor Griffin brings us the very latest from the Storm camp.

“Everyone is champing at the bit to get going in the Charlotte Edwards Cup,” he explained when we spoke to him earlier today. “T20 cricket is fun, entertaining and we get great support. All the players are looking forward to playing in front of some good crowds, especially when we play those double headers.

How important does he think the double headers are, especially for the younger players in the squad?

“There can be some logistical challenges with the double headers but they bring in a different audience,” he said. “That’s great because it gives the players the chance to showcase their skills and talent. That enables us to grow the game and take it to new supporters. The players love that environment and being out in the middle in a brilliant atmosphere.”

What’s the mood in the camp like now that we are just days away from the start of the T20 competition?

“We’ve had two training games recently and it’s been great to see the enthusiasm within the squad. There’s been inventiveness and bravery and that’s the sort of thing that we’re looking forward to seeing in this competition. Hopefully, we can play some entertaining cricket for our supporters.

“We are experiencing something of a transitional period at the moment, but we do have a lot of talent in the squad. Whilst we’re young in age, there is a lot of experience that we can draw on in the changing room. We will be going out there to win every game and make it to Finals Day. We’ve been working really hard towards achieving that.

“It’s a young squad, so we’re bound to make the occasional mistake along the way, but it’s important that we learn from that. If we play to our potential we will be very hard to beat. The games come thick and fast but the girls are very clear about their roles. As coaches we need to back them, support themย  and encourage them to go out and deliver what we’ve seen they’re capable of.”

Western Storm’s first match in the Charlotte Edwards Cup is against Northern Diamonds on Friday. Our first home match in the competition is against Thunder at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton on Sunday.
