Trevor's Big Bash Diary

Western Storm Head Coach, Trevor Griffin is spending the winter in the Southern Hemisphere working with Canterbury Cricket & Sydney Thunder.

Trevor will be keeping us up to date with what’s happening Down Under this winter with his Big Bash Diary.

Here is part one:

“My first stop was at Canterbury Cricket in New Zealand. I’ve worked with the teams there for the past few winters and was delighted to get the chance to go back. From there, I’ve come across to Australia to take up my role with Sydney Thunder to work in the WBBL & BBL.

“With Canterbury I’ve worked mainly with the men’s 1st & 2nd squads, supporting the coaches and working with their wicket keeper who’s just made his New Zealand A debut. here I could, I also caught up with The Magicians, Canterbury’s women’s team. My role at Sydney Thunder is mainly with the women in the WBBL, although I’m also really looking forward to working with the men too once the BBL gets underway. Training in the sunshine at the SCG has been an amazing experience so far and I can’t wait for the tournament to really get going!

“We got off to a great start last Sunday winning our first game against Melbourne Renegades & we have a big local derby against Sydney Sixers up next which will be a great occasion. They lost their first game so they’ll be wanting to get on the board, but we’ll be working especially hard to beat our neighbours and make it two wins from two. The men’s training gears up now too with the arrival of most of the International players over the next few days ready to start the BBL tournament.”

“Back home we saw the announcement of the 2019 KSL fixtures. It’s going to be a busy summer of  Women’s cricket with West Indies touring & the Ashes too, so I’m excited to see we’ll be finishing the women’s summer with the KSL. The fixtures come thick and fast in August and it looks like it will be a hectic time with lots of travel and very few days in between games, so we’ll need to be well prepared. Our first game is against Loughborough Lightning. We always have good games against them and I’ve no doubt we can expect a tough start to our campaign. It’s great to see we have double headers at Taunton & Bristol, and we’re really excited to have the chance to play under the new lights at Taunton. We always get great support there & playing under the lights will add extra excitement.

“Most of our international players have been at the World T20 whilst the non Internationals returned to work or college. After a few weeks’ break  at the end of a hectic season, training’s now back on the schedule and they’ve been working through their Strength & Conditioning programs. We’re looking at running another Storm winter program from February, before the players focus on their County competitions in April. Then before you know it, it will be July and the Storm squad for 2019 will be together & getting ready for the KSL.  Heather, Smriti, Stafanie & Rachel are all involved with the WBBL with Rachel and Stafanie here with me at Sydney. Heather & Smriti are at Hobart Hurricanes so it’s bound to be a great match when we all catch up again. It’s always good to have some friendly inter-Storm rivalry!

“It promises to be a busy winter and I hope that all the Stormtroopers out there have a brilliant Christmas!”

We’ll be catching up with Trevor again in the New Year.
